Endless Possibilities! - Our introduction to open ended play.

Starting our journey with understanding, building an open ended play environment!

Well, it all started when I felt like kids are meant to explore, be curious and NOT necessarily just follow instructions. Most of the toys today are very instructions based, match the shapes, color within borders, follow the path etc etc.

I saw that my toddler was getting good at following instructions and doing exactly what it said! Shouldn't this be like a win! I actually started feeling like I was taking away the creativity, making more instruction following kid. I am not in any way saying kids shouldn't follow instructions, they absolutely should learn too. And in many things they should, but while they play, do things, maybe NOT.

That's when I started exploring what would it be like if we weren't into these toys and having kids follow instructions to create things/play only in a certain way. The first thing I noticed was these battery operated toys. They are like the worst enemies you can have. Then it was the lack of open spaces :(

As I started reading more, I was introduced to this concept of open-ended-play. And as I read more and more about it, it started making so much more sense. I am going to share my experience as we, go through transforming into being an open-ended play based family. I say family and YES family, because I feel its not just your kid changing something. It's a lot more about how you change your perspective, how you change your expectations, how you change how you interact with them.

Open Ended Play is all about :

  • No pressure : Some say less pressure, I like to believe its NO pressure. There are no prescribed outcomes. That eases off any pressure on achievement. Kids are inspired by inner inspiration and creativity. Let's them be who they are!

  • Explore ideas and concepts : There are NO errors. Kids are exploring so if they built something upside down, well thats their imagination. Let them! They are introduced to various physics, science concept themselves when they explore new things.

  • Problem solving : As kids explore new things, new ideas they define a problem for themselves and work towards solving that. There isn't a better way for them to learn how they resolve issues as they go along.

Follow our journey as we explore our way into and through open-ended-play!

Kid friendly wineries!

Visiting wineries with a toddler, it is a requirement to look for wineries that are kid friendly! As we continue our wine adventure, I plan on sharing kid friendly wineries as we explore! Napa Castello Di Amorosa A Tuscan style castle winery with beautiful views! Plan on making reservation during summer, holidays or weekends - It’s a popular spot and guided tours can be sold out. If you don’t plan on doing a guided tour, they offer general admission for two levels of the castle and wine tasting. The castle has grass area outside with some trees. Trees are great on hot summer day to sit and relax. Winery comes with emus, peacocks, goats, sheep and chicken. Great for kids to run around, and play with the animals. The coolest dungeon tasting room, lets you enjoy some wine tasting while the kids are kept happily occupied with breadsticks and grape juice. A knight’s suit of armor in the corner completes the ambiance.St Helena downtown is just...

Wandering Toddler in Kauai,Hawaii!

Napali Coast When you think of Hawaii, you think of beaches, sand and beautiful weather! That's exactly what we had in mind when we thought of going to Hawaii. One of the islands in central Pacific, with tropical weather makes it a perfect vacation destination. We went to the island called "Kauai" this time around. When we plan family vacation here's something's we consider: Time : What's the best time? Truthfully, Hawaii is good all year long. ;) Summers can be really hot but then winter's can be rainy. Having the luxury of planning it without school restrictions, we planned it in September.  Going in September has it's advantages : 1. Cheaper airfares 2. Cheaper hotels/resorts 3. Less crowded 4. Weather is nicer! We went to Kauai, Hawaii mid Sept and found that airfare were cheaper after Labor Day weekend.  Hotel: This particular choice has largely changed since becoming a parent. We no more prefer hotels, rather resor...

DIY : Gifts

Gifts : Gifts is one of those things that everyone loves. And especially with all the festivities, its seems like the gifting/gift giving season. Where I grew up, it wasn't so much about gifting around the festivals or holidays. Something I dislike is the expectation you build about receiving gifts every year. With Toddler S growing up and getting to an age where she understands gifts etc, I thought of starting the concept of gifting as NOT buying new things but gifts/gifting - Is about GIVING Is about making something on your own, make it personal Is about SHARING Well, so with all these festivals - Diwali, Christmas, I wanted to make it all about GIVING! Toddler S has this awesome gift drive at school for the kids in Santa Rosa and I thought that's the best opportunity for us to start this. We bought some random wood trucks, cars, airplanes, colors and some gift boxes from Michaels. Toddler S loves coloring, so we painted them, packed them in ...
